Kidwriting:
Kidwriting is a method of journaling that is fun and meaningful for the
children. We will begin writing in
a “storybook” right away.
Your child will ease into doing the writing himself at his or her own
pace. He may begin by writing
only squiggly lines, or beginning sounds and then progress to invented spelling
and finally to writing words and simple sentences.
This will be a very positive, low stress situation for your child.
I’ll send the storybooks home periodically for you to enjoy and send
back to us.
This is our kindergarten homework. Each
night, the children will choose a book that they would like to check out to
bring home inside a plastic bag. Please
spend 15 minutes each night reading to your child and discussing the story. As the year progresses, your child may even begin reading to
you! Look for the book to come home
in the backpacks. If your child
does not have a book on a particular night, please read to them one of their own
books anyway.
Weekend Visitor:
Every Friday, I will send a stuffed animal and a notebook home with one
child. If it is your child’s turn, please let your child carry the animal with
her all weekend. For example, to McDonald’s for lunch, or to church on
Sunday. Then, on Sunday, you can
help your child write a journal entry from either his point of view or the
animal’s point of view about the adventures they had over the weekend .
On Monday morning, your child will have the opportunity to share with me
and the rest of the class what he did with his “friend” over the weekend.
It is important that your child gains the oral language skills needed to
speak in front of a group, and this activity really helps boost self-confidence! Show and tell will be on Thursdays. The boys and girls will alternate Thursdays, so your child will have it every other week. This will start on the Thursday of our first week of full days. Girls will be first. Birthday Readers: I invite you to come to school on the day we celebrate your child's birthday and read a story of his or her choice. Contact me in advance to set up the day and time. |
