CLASSROOM MANAGEMENT -- A GREAT TECHNIQUE!!
"One classroom management technique I have found which works exceptionally
well with all ages and abilities is to have a book of cloakroom or raffle tickets.
Students all start with one (because they are all good people) and then they get tickets
for anything good -work, behavior, homework, an answer in class, being well
organized,
being kind to some-one, improved effort etc etc etc. You can give them out
lavishly! They
write their name on it, roll it into a ball, and drop it into an ice cream container. Then
when anything good is going, you have a lucky draw e.g. our library is air-conditioned but
classrooms are not, so, in midsummer, it's a great prize to be allowed to go work in the
library with a friend of your choice. And on Friday afternoons or random other occasions,
I bring a packet of yummies and have a lucky draw. (It's as much fun to draw the tickets
out as to be a winner!) In Primary you could also draw names out for going on a message
etc. With older students, I take a vote on whether they wish to participate in the system.
(No class has ever voted against it although those who really consider themselves 'cool'
adopt a 'why not - if it keeps the poor old teacher happy' attitude. It works like magic -
You have a class full of chattering children and you find one who has a book out or is
on-task. Without a word you just place a ticket on their desk and hey presto, everyone is
suddenly heads down, working!!! On occasions you wander around and allocate tickets for
good progress. Student productivity accelerates. One ironclad rule - you MUST
honor all
ticket draws. If the naughtiest pupil in the class is being an absolute monster that day
but wins the right to go to the library or on a message or whatever, you can NOT retract
that reward be-cause he/ she has been misbehaving today. They earned the ticket fair and
square and it can't be cancelled. In fact winning a prize or a privilege on a 'bad' day
can be enough to turn that poor behavior around!
