1492 POEM
http//www.geocities.com/Athens/Thebes/9893/columbus.htm
Ever wonder what the complete words were to the "sailed the ocean blue" poem? Here they are; have your early elementary class pair up to present a small play, each group quoting 2 lines and holding up a construction paper ocean on a popsicle stick, the three ships from other groups, etc.
THE TWO SIDES OF COLUMBUS
http//www.teachnet.com/lesson/socstudies/columbus101298.html
Christophe Colombe has recently fallen out of favor with fresh historical perspectives. Your students can examine his fame from the point of view of Honduran In-dians, though you may wish to have your students consider that their own viewpoints are biased to modern contexts and visions. How would they have viewed similar evidence 550 years ago? Try two mock trials, from the perspectives of two different historical time frames. You might also lead an invigorating and valuable discussion on how we can--or cannot--discern historical accuracies. Also available at this site is an activity to reproduce, to scale, the dimensions of Columbus' ships by drawing them with chalk in the school parking lot.
